Introducing Dadli Gyal

ST. JOHN’S, Antigua (February 14, 2023)—And then there was one. Team Antigua Island Girls’ boat-naming contest went from 64 submissions, to the top 10, to the top five and then to the winner.

Following a weeklong polling exercise, from February 3-10, 2023, the people’s choice for the name of the boat is … drumroll please …. Dadli Gyal submitted by Ashfield Vigo.

Dadli Gyal edged out Wadadli Aukai (Shennette Whyte) by 45 votes, amassing 12,428 while Wadadli Aukai received 12,383. The other names in the running were Sherows, Refica Attwood (1,202); SECKsea, Samista Ellis (490); and Island Gyal, Natasha Maginley-Francis (172).

TAIG thanks the 51 people who took the time to submit 64 names and the rationales, as well as the people who took the time and got into the competitive spirit to amass a total vote count of 26,675.

Vigo has a choice to put his name or the name of a special woman in his life on the boat in the boosters’ section. This ‘prize’ has a USD $750 value.
